Ask and You Shall Receive Question Mark
The Art of Asking
by Angela Brown Oberer

A special project for work the other day required that I match the cities in our database with the counties the cities are located in.And then it occurred to me that I don’t own a directory of counties.

Stumped for only a minute, and already at my computer, I went to www.Google.com  to search for such a directory. The query returned a bunch of websites, yet nothing specific to what I was looking for.

Empirical wisdom suggests that in every facet of life if we are not getting the answers we seek, we are either asking the wrong questions, or we are asking the wrong sources.

Being 98% convinced that what I was looking for was a directory of counties, I figured I must be asking the wrong source.

My Friend Jeeves from AskJeeves.com How about Jeeves?
Jeeves is my omnipotent friend at www.AskJeeves.com who wears a tailored suit and lives in my computer and has an answer for just about everything. Jeeves did recommend several sources, however, directories were listed by state and $35 each.

Still at my computer I went to my library home page to the section “Ask a Librarian” where I can be connected 24/7 to a reference librarian who at any given time is answering questions to people all over the globe.

The service is free to people like you and me and grants the biblical promise “Ask and ye shall receive”.

The librarian came back with a question, did I want a printed version or an online version? Did I want to check a directory out at my local library, or did I want to purchase one from a database specialist? Within a few short moments the librarian introduced me to www.Naco.org which is the National Association of Counties where I can type in the name of the city needing a county and presto! The answer appears.
