Personal Wellness Musings

"A wise old owl sat in an oak, the more he saw, the less he spoke, the less he spoke, the more he heard, why can't we all be like that wise old bird?"

“A person is afraid of growing old to the extent that he is not really living now.”
– Carl Jung

“Burning the midnight oil has its advantages; it has its consequences too. When the consequences outweigh the advantages,
it’s time to go to bed.” – Angela Brown Oberer

“A man of fifty is responsible for his face.”
– Stanton

"Nobody can walk over you if you’re not lying down."
- Angela Brown Oberer

“The sky behind the clouds is always blue.”
– Barbel Mohr

“As one acts and conducts himself, so does he become. The doer of good becomes good. The doer of evil becomes evil. One becomes virtuous by virtuous action, bad by bad action.”
-Veda Upanishads

“It takes one a long time to be young.”
– Picasso

“No baby was every born into this world stressed out, trying to be cool or with low self-esteem – those are all learned behaviors.”
– Barbel Mohr

September is Personal Wellness Month

Woman sitting on a park bench contemplating Personal Wellness   Objective: To enrich your personal life through growth and change, to update your look, image, boost your self-esteem and develop your personal power.

TO DO:

  • Seek out a fashion consultant. Update your wardrobe with a few key and classic pieces.  You can save a bunch of money if instead of buying trendy clothing, instead buy a few classic separates. Buy trendy accessories and dress up your classics. This way you'll spend a fraction of the cost and still have the upper hand on the latest fashions.

  • Donate old clothing to a thrift store. The rule in our house is if you buy something new, you must get rid of something old. This keeps us continually asking ourselves what do we have that we are not wearing or using anymore? It allows us to free up space and keep on top of clutter.

  • Whiten your teeth - with the advent of do-it-yourself teeth whiteners, there is no reason everyone can't have pearly whites.

  • Lose Weight - I think we're all aware of the obesity epidemic in America today. It's so easy to get trapped into the mentality of econo-sizing our meals - twice as much for a few cents more and who doesn't want a bargain? But it's showing up in our expanding waistlines. And the extra weight is showing up as backaches, knee and joint problems, sleep problems, diabetes, heart disease, relationship battles, self-esteem struggles and more. If eating too much has been a problem for you, try cutting your portions in half. You'll be hungry for a good week or so, then you'll notice your stomach starting to shrink to acclimate to less food.

  • Polish your shoes.  - You don't necessarily need new shoes, but a good polish can go a long way. Lots of shoe companies sell inexpensive shoes that can look dazzling with regular polishing. Get in the habit of checking your shoes before bedtime and if they need a brush up - use a do-it-yourself shoe polisher - it will only take a minute or two and the next day, your shoes will look brand spankin' new. Besides that, it will upgrade your look.

  • Get a manicure, pedicure and a new hair do. Did you ever notice that you get the most compliments on your look when you come home from the parlor? You've got that fresh new look that reeks of "I just got a new do". People who don't even know you can tell. Looking good boosts your self-esteem, makes you walk a little taller, hold your head a bit higher and suddenly you're feeling as good as you look. You deserve to feel this good all the time.

  • Take lessons from the hair dresser. Learn what products to use to make your hair look that way all the time. Practice at home. Make every day a special occasion.

  • Buy a nice piece of jewelry or watch that you can wear most of the time. Gaudy may be trendy but if you'll invest in one really nice piece of jewelry you'll be amazed at how many casual outfits it will dress up. The piece I've chosen is a stainless steel watch that is both feminine and classic. Then everything else I wear that is platinum, silver or steel matches it and  ties in with buckles on my shoes, rings or clips on my clothing, handbags, belts, earrings, or hair accessories. If I only wear one piece of jewelry, it will be my watch because it's both practical and dressy.

  • Get Organized, clean your closets, bedroom, office and other living spaces. There is nothing quite like the feel of a clean smelling house that is tidy as a pin. It makes you want to jump with glee. You can get this feeling by picking up after yourself daily, and schedule time once a week to run through the entire house with a duster, vacuum and Windex. Keep your living space clean and you'll always look forward to coming home.
