Say No to Dieting and Yes to a Lifestyle Change
by Angela Brown

Almost 200lbs and having tried a variety of diets that didn't work, I stumbled into a solution one day. I showed up at the Hilton Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina with my laptop and a MilkyWay waiting for a seminar to end so I could do a lifestyles interview with a salesman who had earned thirty million dollars in a seven-year span. As fortune would have it, I accidentally went into the wrong meeting room and instead, sat through an entire program on the seven sins of eating.

Roughly 58% of Americans are overweight and mostly because of our eating habits he told us, we eat too much of the wrong stuff. I watched as Dr. Joe Esposito from Marietta, Georgia wowed the audience with his charm and bizarre solutions.

“Go home and unplug your fridge, and after 72 hours if there is anything in there that is not crawling, hasn’t molded or doesn’t bite you back, you can eat. All the rest of the stuff in there you should never have eaten in the first place.” This solution he promised would help you become conscious of buying “healthy” food such as fruit and vegetables that would in 72 hours still be as good as new.

Though somewhat extreme, I unplugged my fridge that night. That was May of 1994. And I did not plug my fridge back in until late 2001 when my raw carrot juice couldn’t survive the heat of summer for more than a day.

That one exercise alone not only helped me get down to my optimum weight of 120lbs it also taught me this:

  • When you have no refrigeration in your house, you reduce your tendency to buy cheesecake and ice cream and other junk that is fun to eat.
  • You don’t buy more than you can eat in a day or two, and you don’t buy enough for leftovers.
  • If you are going to have a treat, you will have to go out. And I did, once a week I would go out for ice cream (my biggest weakness) but instead of enjoying an entire half-gallon, I went instead to Ben & Jerry’s where one scoop was my limit.

More simple solutions to help you lose weight and keep it off include these:

  • Bring out the pictures of you at your heaviest. Post them on your bathroom mirror so you will see them when you brush your teeth. Those are your before pictures. Now look at yourself in the mirror, You are your after picture. You look great don’t you?
  • Pick one day – the same day each week, let’s say Thursday, when you will eat fun foods like potato chips, pizza, beer, French fries and ice cream. Regulate your eating the rest of the week to healthy stuff like raw fruits and veggies, salads, sprouts, juice and nuts. This way you can have the best of both worlds where you lose weight, feel great, have more energy, look superb and still get to enjoy the finer pleasures of eating.
  • As you drop clothing sizes, get rid of your big clothes so you don’t have the option of growing back into them. Soon you will have a new wardrobe of latest fashion clothes that look as good as you do.
  • Everybody goofs occasionally. But don’t wait until tomorrow, or Monday to start over. Begin again with the next meal and get back on track.

Although I never did get that interview on lifestyles, my lifestyle changed that day with a few conscious choices that have me looking and feeling by best.

Thanks Dr. Joe.
