55 Ways to Get a Great Job Fast by Angela Brown

FastTrack: 55 Ways to Get a Great Job Fast
by Angela Brown © 2007 Continued

Be Punctual

  • When showing up for an interview, show up on time or five minutes before your appointment.

  • Do not show up an hour early or even consider being late. Being punctual shows you respect your own time and that of the person offering you an interview.

  • Many qualified candidates have lost job opportunities because they didn’t allow themselves enough time to get to the appointment on time, or they got lost or whatever. Be prepared.

  • Ask for specific instructions before you leave home.

  • Take the phone number of the person interviewing you in case something tragic happens on the way and you have to call from your cell phone to say you are late and need to reschedule.

Questions for the Interview

  • Do prepare some questions in advance about the company.

  • Do not bring that list of questions with you and read them in front of the interviewer.

  • Do ask questions that are easy for the interviewer to answer.

  • Don’t ask questions about the company that can be found on their website or in their literature.

  • Do ask how soon the company needs to fill the position.

  • Do not ask questions about salary or fringe benefits on the first interview.

The Job Interview

  • During the job interview, be prepared to answer the question “Why were you fired?” or "Why are you changing jobs now?"

  • Prepare your answer(s) in advance.

  • Do not volunteer the information until asked that question.

  • Be diplomatic. Say something like “The boss and I had disagreeing management styles” or “differences of opinions”.

  • Keep it simple and do not go into a lengthy description.

  • DO NOT badmouth the company who fired you or the boss. That can only hurt, not help you.

Happiness is Not a Job

Too often, we place happiness outside us saying, “I’ll be happy when… I have a job, when I get a new boss, when I get a raise, when I pay off my debt, when I get a new house etc.) And it is true that when we get that one thing that was supposed to make us happy, we want something else to make us happy.

Learn to be happy where you are now and then when you get a new job, a new boss, a raise or get out of debt, you will still be happy.

Happiness comes from inside, not from external things.

Hang out with Your Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders are those who light a spark under you when you’re down, they boost your spirits and encourage you to go after the thing that you want and believe you can get it.

  • During a job search, it is important to find cheerleaders who believe in you and your cause, and stay in very close contact with them. Your biggest cheerleader who has your best interests in mind and who knows what you are capable of is the one who created you.
  • Trust, Leap and do not look back.
